Read Signs With UTA Basketball

On Wednesday, November 9, Matt Read, senior at Weatherford High School, formally announced his intention to play basketball for the University of Texas in Arlington.

Joined by teammates, coaches, teachers, friends, and family, Read signed his National Letter of Intent at a ceremony at WHS Wednesday night.  Senior Kara Lawrence also signed for Rice University the same night.

Read’s basketball career began in Weatherford in 2001 as and eighth-grader at Tison Middle School.  The 6-foot-7 senior plays both the forward and post positions for WHS.  Weatherford High coach Terry Ferguson said, “Matt has excellent shooting touch from 15 feet and has the ability to take opponents inside with an array of post moves!”

Last season as a starter he averaged 10.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.  Read was also named to the Waxahachie All-Tournament Team and the District 4-5A All-District second team during the 2004-2005 season.

Starting at age six, Read has played for a variety of different teams including the renowned Amateur Athletic Union.  This summer he played for the AAU Dallas Mustangs White team under the direction of coach Grady Dale of Desoto, Texas.

“Matt Read is a class act with a great work ethic.  He has the best fundamentals of any kid that I’ve coached,” stated Dale.

Read is active in many different organizations at WHS including the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Young Republicans, President’s Club, and the Leadership Club.

He is the son of Rande and Karen Read of Weatherford, Texas, and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Read will join the UTA Mavericks next year during the 2006-2007 basketball season.
