New Start Date on Proposed 2005-2006
Calendar

the NEW proposed 2005-2006 calendar]
The Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees met on Thursday,
December 9, 2004 in a regular meeting and discussed the 2005-2006
instructional calendar. The Board approved the application of the
waiver, however, moved the proposed start date of the proposed draft
calendar to Monday, August 15, 2005.
Texas Education Code states that school districts may
begin the first day of school no earlier than the week in which August
21 falls. In 2005, that day is Monday, August 22, seven days later
than the 2004-2005 school year began. A Calendar Study Committee was
created to study the information and developed the draft calendar that
was recommended to the administration in late November.
In order to begin school prior to the legislated start
date, the district must apply to the Texas Education Agency for a
waiver. The district is required to host a public hearing to collect
input from the public regarding the proposed start date before the
Board of Trustees will consider approval of the calendar. This
hearing is scheduled for Thursday, January 20, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in
the District Services Building at 1100 Longhorn Drive. For more
information, contact Bill Shatford, executive director of student
services.
