Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
Announced
E.D. Rains, chairman of the WISD
Athletic Hall of Fame steering committee, announced the new members of
the hall last weekend. On Saturday, February 19, four
individuals and one team will be honored at the Hall of Fame banquet
and induction ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the WHS High School
Cafeteria.
The 2005 inductees are Betty Jo Crumm
Graber, Duncan McCauley, Albert J. "Curley" Williams, Larry Wright,
and the 1982 4A state finalist baseball team. This will be the
second induction ceremony for the Hall of Fame.
Mrs. Graber coached at Weatherford High
School from 1954-56. She attained numerous honors as a coach for many
national teams and was an inaugural inductee into the Weatherford
College Coyote Wall of Honor. The gymnasium there bears her name.
McCauley was an outstanding football player in the late 1940s. He
attended Midwestern State University before playing pro ball for the
Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers.
He was very active in organizing and coaching minor league football in
North America and was posthumously inducted into the Minor League Hall
of Fame in 1984. McCauley passed away in 1980 of a heart attack.
Although he is probably better
known for his business activities and National Guard, Williams played
football and ran track for Weatherford High School. His 1940
Kangaroo squad played Bowie for the bi-district title. The game
ended in a tie, 6-6, and yards gained were also even.
Bowie was awarded the title on first downs, winning 13-12.
Williams was an outstanding runner in high school and later was active
in the boxing programs at the National Guard Armory.
A team captain his junior and senior years, Wright was named
all-district to the 5-3A champions in 1965 and also to the 1966 quarterfinal winners.
He was all-conference at Cisco Junior College in 1967 and was starting
strong safety at Texas Christian University in 1968-69. Wright coached in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford district and at Everman High
School before returning to HEB at Trinity High School.
He moved back to Weatherford and pursued other interests until his
death in 1992.
The 1982 baseball team was a state 4A finalist. Bill McGee was coach
of the award-winning squad.
Tickets are currently on sale for $15 at
the WHS Athletic Office, Snow Garrett and Company, and through E.D.
Rains at the Judge Fite Century 21 office.
WISD congratulates the 2005 Hall of Fame
inductees and is appreciative of the impact these individuals and team
have made to our district.
