Currently, the WISD Dyslexia program is based on the
Orton-Gilliam approach, the standard in dyslexia
remediation.
The WISD
Dyslexia Program is available for any student that exhibits
reading difficulty, has not responded to intensive reading
instruction, and through evaluation, meets state criteria
for a student who exhibits the symptoms of dyslexia. The
program, based on research, is short term. Students receive
two to three years of remediation training providing them
with the skills and strategies to compensate for a life-long
neurological condition. Academic Language Therapists
provide services to dyslexic students in all secondary
schools, Curtis, and Seguin through a pull out program. In
the remaining elementary campuses, highly trained resource teachers
deliver services to identified students in an inclusive
program with other students who have reading disabilities.
Again, the Orton-Gilliam approach is used in this model.
