Special Education


For students to be considered as having disabilities and be eligible for special education services, they must meet one of the following thirteen (13) eligibility categories:

  • learning disabled
  • orthopedic impairment
  • visual impairment
  • autism
  • non categorical Early Childhood (3-5 year olds, non-specific disability)
  • emotionally disturbed
  • other health impaired
  • traumatic brain injury
  • mentally retarded
  • deaf-blindness
  • speech impairment
  • multiple handicaps
  • auditory impairment

Students that qualify may begin to receive services by their third birthday, and may continue to receive services if needed through the school year that they turn 22 years old.

 


Programs Offered

Currently, the WISD Special Education Department is able to serve students through eleven distinct programs.  Eligibility for any special education class or service is determined by the ARD committee.
